About The Song

Baby i need your loving by The Four Tops, CD with stereotomy - Ref:119762601

Before the summer of 1964, the Four Tops were relatively unknown, but their debut song changed that swiftly. Selling over a million copies, a remarkable accomplishment even by today’s iTunes standards, the single just missed breaking into the Top 10.

In the studio, songwriters and producers Holland-Dozier-Holland followed the path of Phil Spector. They brought in a 40-piece string section and complemented the Four Tops’ vocals with backing vocals from the Andantes, a female trio under Motown. The production mirrored Spector’s Wall of Sound, simultaneously grand and intimate. Despite the emphasis on strings and vocals, pay attention to the echo on those finger snaps – a nod to Spector.

Levi Stubbs’ lead vocals authentically convey the yearning of a lover seeking forgiveness. His rendition of the line “lately I’ve been losing sleep” perfectly captures a midnight soul search in an oversized bed.

While the competition between the Four Tops and Temptations was fierce at Berry Gordy’s Hitsville U.S.A. studio, on the charts, and among fans, the Four Tops’ debut offering rivaled the Temptations’ breakthrough, “The Way You Do the Things You Do.”

This enduring song charted in various forms (as both “Baby I Need Your Lovin'” and “Baby, I Need Your Loving”) for nearly two decades post-release. Johnny Rivers, a folk singer, had the first cover hit in 1967. Subsequently, it became a hit for O.C. Smith, a lounge singer, Geraldine Hunt, a soul singer, Eric Carmen, a pop idol, and finally, Carl Carlton, a funk singer, in 1982.

Lyrics

 Baby, I need your lovin’
Baby, I need your lovin’

Although you’re never near
Your voice I often hear
Another day, another night
I long to hold you tight
‘Cause I’m so lonely

Baby, I need your lovin’
Got to have all your lovin’
Baby, I need your lovin’
Got to have all your lovin’

Some say it’s a sign of weakness
For a man to beg
Then weak I’d rather be
If it means havin’ you to keep
‘Cause lately I’ve been losin’ sleep

Baby, I need your lovin’
Got to have all your lovin’
Baby, I need your lovin’
Got to have all your lovin’

Empty nights echo your name
Whoa, sometimes I wonder
Will I ever be the same?
Oh yeah

When you see me smile, you know
Things have gotten worse
Any smile you might see
Has all been rehearsed

Darlin’, I can’t go on without you
This emptiness won’t let me live without you
This loneliness inside me, darlin’
Makes me feel half alive

Baby, I need your lovin’
Got to have all your lovin’
Baby, I need your lovin’
Got to have all your lovin’

Baby, I need your lovin’
Got to have all your lovin’
Baby, I need your lovin’
Got to have all your lovin’
